Here, we demonstrate experimentally that in the adult zebrafish valvular part of the cerebellum, the Purkinje cells exhibited variable firing and functional responses and allowed the categorization into three firing classes. Compared with the Purkinje cells in the corpus cerebelli, the valvular Purkinje cells receive weak and occasional input from the inferior olive and are not active during locomotion. Together, our findings expand further the regional functional differences of the Purkinje cell population and expose their non-locomotor functionality.", "doi": "10.1038/s41598-021-98035-3", "pmid": "34526620", "labels": [], "xrefs": [{"db": "pmc", "key": "PMC8443705"}, {"db": "pii", "key": "10.1038/s41598-021-98035-3"}], "notes": [], "created": "2026-08-20T09:23:11.483Z", "modified": "2026-08-20T09:23:11.540Z"}, {"entity": "publication", "iuid": "f1ff279910d144059ab02bc19777d454", "links": {"self": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/publication/f1ff279910d144059ab02bc19777d454.json"}, "display": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/publication/f1ff279910d144059ab02bc19777d454"}}, "title": "Functionally distinct Purkinje cell types show temporal precision in encoding locomotion.", "authors": [{"family": "Chang", "given": "Weipang", "initials": "W"}, {"family": "Pedroni", "given": "Andrea", "initials": "A", "orcid": "0000-0001-8536-9656", "researcher": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/researcher/925b656601c346819f645771e9957447.json"}}, {"family": "Hohendorf", "given": "Victoria", "initials": "V", "orcid": "0000-0003-3049-4964", "researcher": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/researcher/340dc186136d4cb584721d864f735f47.json"}}, {"family": "Giacomello", "given": "Stefania", "initials": "S", "orcid": "0000-0003-0738-1574", "researcher": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/researcher/5a9c4a7494ba4284ab52158e6cbc85da.json"}}, {"family": "Hibi", "given": "Masahiko", "initials": "M", "orcid": "0000-0002-9142-4444", "researcher": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/researcher/6050c0cda5aa49cfb364b8a1d9ff3108.json"}}, {"family": "K\u00f6ster", "given": "Reinhard W", "initials": "RW", "orcid": "0000-0001-6593-8196", "researcher": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/researcher/68c8d39acb884fd2a4856ae7101be88c.json"}}, {"family": "Ampatzis", "given": "Konstantinos", "initials": "K", "orcid": "0000-0001-7998-6463", "researcher": {"href": "https://publications-affiliated.scilifelab.se/researcher/270b0475ad60482f81023e85241c9c51.json"}}], "type": "journal article", "published": "2020-07-21", "journal": {"title": "Proc. Here, we show an undiscovered heterogeneity of adult zebrafish Purkinje cells, revealing the existence of anatomically and functionally distinct cell types. Dual patch-clamp recordings showed that the cerebellar circuit contains all Purkinje cell types that cross-communicate extensively using chemical and electrical synapses. Further activation of spinal central pattern generators (CPGs) revealed unique phase-locked activity from each Purkinje cell type during the locomotor cycle. Thus, we show intricately organized Purkinje cell networks in the adult zebrafish cerebellum that encode the locomotion rhythm differentially, and we suggest that these organizational properties may also apply to other cerebellar functions.", "doi": "10.1073/pnas.2005633117", "pmid": "32632015", "labels": [], "xrefs": [{"db": "pmc", "key": "PMC7382291"}, {"db": "pii", "key": "2005633117"}], "notes": [], "created": "2026-08-20T09:30:44.051Z", "modified": "2026-08-20T09:30:44.306Z"}]}
